$11 billion weapons enhancement program progressing on schedule

As part of its $11 billion weapons enhancement program, United States Forces Korea recently completed deploying more than 100 upgraded M1A1 Abrams main battle tanks to the border area separating the two Koreas, U.S. officials said.

The old version of the M1A1 tanks, which underwent five months of repairs, have been sent to Iraq. The final batch of more than 30 older vehicles left Korea last Thursday from the southern port of Busan for Kuwait, from where they will be sent on to Iraq by the end of the year.

USFK has been receiving the newer and refurbished M1AI tanks since this summer as part of the force modernization process it is putting in place as it makes its planned one-third reduction of U.S. forces on the peninsula.

USFK has 140 M1A1 tanks and 170 Bradley armored vehicles in its principal weapons inventory.

“The latest M1A1 incorporates several new features that improve the capability and combat readiness of the Army`s 2nd Infantry Division,” Col. John N. Tully, 8th U.S. Army Assistant Chief of Staff for Operations, said in a statement.

The new tank carries the 120 mm M256 cannon with improved target acquisition, engine and armor upgrades and digital capability. The 2ID`s 1st Brigade Combat Team recently conducted gunnery training with the new tanks at the Rodriguez Range.

“Our resolve and commitment to defend the Republic of Korea is absolute and we continuously cooperate with our Korean allies so they completely understand the changes and, more importantly, the improved capabilities we offer to succeed in our mutual defense mission,” Tully said.

Washington has planned to enhance its weaponry here with some 150 new items.

The two allies agreed in October to cut the U.S. troop level here to about 24,500 by 2008 from the current level of about 34,000.

As a part of the programs, two U.S. Navy F/A18 Hornet squadrons and supporting radar-jamming EA-6B Prowlers were deployed from Japan earlier this month to Osan, some 55 kilometers south of Seoul. They have been conducting simulated strikes in a two-week joint training exercise with other U.S. aircraft units of the F-16 Fighting Falcon and A-10 Thunderbolt II.

Air Force Maj. Edwina M. Walton at USFK`s public affairs office said that the squadrons came to Korea to familiarize themselves with the region, which “also opens the doors for future trainings.”
The other force enhancements include an upgrade of multiple rocket launchers and unmanned aerial reconnaissance and surveillance vehicles such as the Predator and the Global Hawk.

The U.S. military also completed in late November the deployment of its upgraded Patriot missile batteries to the peninsula.

주한미군은 최근 110억불 무기증강계획의 일환으로 남북한을 나누고 있는 휴전선 지역에 M1A1 에이브럼스 탱크 100여대의 배치를 완료했다.

M1A1 탱크의 구모델은 5개월 간의 수리를 마치고 이라크로 보내졌다. 구형 탱크 30여대가 지난 목요일에 마지막으로 부산항을 떠나 쿠웨이트로 향했으며 그곳에서 다시 올 연말까지 이라크로 보내질 예정이다.

주한미군은 한반도 주둔 병력의 1/3을 감축하는 대신 그 공백을 메우려는 화력현대화 과정의 일환으로 올 여름부터 신형 M1A1 탱크를 공급받고 있다.

주한미군은 M1A1 탱크 140대와 브래들리 장갑차 170대를 주력 화기로 보유하고 있다.

“최신형 M1A1 탱크는 육군 제2보병사단의 화력과 임전태세를 향상시키는 몇 가지 새 기능을 장착하고 있다”고 미 8군 참모차장인 존 툴리 대령이 발표문을 통해 말했다.

이 신형 탱크는 타깃 적중력과 엔진을 향상시키고 장갑능력을 업그레이드하고 디지털 기능을 향상시킨 120밀리미터 M256 대포를 장착하고 있다. 2ID의 제1여단 전투부대는 최근 신형 탱크를 가지고 로드리구에즈 사격장에서 포격훈련을 실시했다.

“대한민국을 방어하겠다는 우리의 약속은 분명하며 한미 양국이 변화를 완전히 이해하도록 한국측과 계속해서 협력할 것이고 보다 더 중요한 것은 우리가 제공하는 향상된 전투력은 우리의 상호방위 임무를 성공으로 이끌 것이다.

미국정부는 주한미군의 화력을 150여 새 화기로 증강할 예정이다.

양 동맹국은 지난 10월 주한미군을 지금의 약 34,000명에서 2008년까지 약 24,500명으로 줄이기로 하는데 합의했다.

이런 계획의 일부로 두 대의 미해군 F/A18 호넷부대와 레이더에 혼선을 일으키는 EA-6 프롤러가 이 달 초에 일본에서 한국의 오산으로 수송되어 왔다. 그들은 다른 F-16 전투기 팔콘과 A-10 썬더볼트 II로 2주일 동안 열리는 한미 합동훈련에서 활기찬 공격을 펼쳐 왔다.

주한미군 공보관인 에드위나 왈턴 공군 대령은 이 공군부대가 한국의 지형을 익히기 위해 그리고 “또한 앞으로의 훈련을 개방하기 위해” 한국에 왔다고 말했다.
